My name is Jack Yakoub and I’m a Mechanical Engineering major at The City College of New York. I am working with Professor Jing Fan on Drop-based Microfluidic Approach to Protein Crystallization. The focus of this project is to use microfluidics to create protein crystals with minimal waste. The process starts by creating PDMS chips which have a specific geometric shape. Then, we use the devices to mix NaCl, Lysozyme, and NaAc into drops that are separated using HFE oil. The protein crystals are used in many instances of treating illnesses and identifying diseases.
